It’s All Good

except when it’s not…

Sympathy cards are just about my least favorite thing to create, I always think I should make them ahead of time so I can be ready, but it just doesn’t happen.  Sadly a couple of people in my life lost people they love last week, so it was time…

I made a couple versions of this card

For info on how to make this butterfly, check out this post – yep this little guys has been hanging around my desk for almost two years.  I’m glad he’s on his way to a new home.

After a couple of sad cards, I felt myself needing a little cheer.  I had some happy scraps from Simple Stories laying around my desk  so I decided to make a happy little card.

Hello Bella

Long time no see…

One of my ‘not really a resolution‘ but hope/plan/strategy for the new year is to dig into the mountain of supplies and stamps and put them to use. I seem to go on ‘stamp’ binges.  I buy several in a short amount of time (like a month) and then go long periods without using and/or buying, then I use which leads to more buying – a vicious cycle I tell you.  So the goal is to use what I have without buying more.

So for today’s card, I dug deep into the stamp drawer and blindly pulled billboardabella –  challenge on…

Good thing I hadn’t put away my distress inks and blender tool from the  timmy tag extravaganza, they came in handy on this card.  I got carried away with my shading, grr, need to get back in the habit.

It’s in the cards

This month at Tattered Angels, we’re all crafting up some cards with a little help from our friends at Epiphany Crafts. My first card was inspired by a new book I picked up recently –Collage Couture by Julie Nutting. Such a fun book with great tips for illustrations and collage work.  I clearly need more practice- I cut my girly out of dictionary paper and misted her with Tattered Rose Glimmer Mist, her top is a scrap with some Mermaid Glam and her skirt is made from hearts punched using the Epiphany Button Studio Heart Tool.  For the background I used a Glimmer Screen from the Fancifuls set and Patina Glimmer Mist on top of some Bo Bunny paper.  A few butterflies coated in Big Apple Glimmer Glam to cover up a stamping boo-boo and this card is ready to roll.

Up next, a card with flowers using one of my favorite things to mist – Athletic Tape.  I discovered this one by accident and just love how the color saturates the tape without it losing it’s stickiness.  I sprayed strips of tape with Patina, Turquoise Blue and Dragonfly Glimmer Mists and then accordion folded them into flowers. The tag was left over from last month’s Birthday Girl layout.  For the background I used the plastic grid from a latch hook rug kit as a stencil.

Have you noticed all the projects with pinwheels popping up around the web,  it’s no wonder, they are a great icon of the carefree days of summer.  I couldn’t resist making a card with them.  For the background I was inspired by a piece of paper from Sassafrass’s Sunshine Broadcast collection – since I couldn’t really cut the paper to scale and maintain the look, I created a similar look with glimmer glam, mists and a little distress ink.  Remember that Glimmer Glam works as a resist when you mist on top of it.

Until next time…

ready, set, go

So I’m searching for my creative mojo – it’s in deep hibernation after a long and stressful school year.  I started by trying to organize and purge some of my stash.  It never fails that I find something buried deep in the pile that I just love and can’t bear to part with.  This round it was the Earth Love line from Cosmo – at least a year maybe two old – so instead of putting it back on the shelf to see if can survive the next round of purging I decided to put it to use with a challenge.  1 hour to make as many cards as I could with it and the rest goes in the give-away bin.  So how many card can a mojo challenged crafter like me make in an hour.

The answer — 7! Not the fanciest or most challenging, but 7 cards in an hour is pretty good if I do say so myself.

What can you do an hour with some old items from your stash?

January Tattered Angles Projects

This month our assigned surface was Canvas…In my world there’s nothing that makes me feel more like an artist than staring at a blank canvas. The possibilities are endless, especially when you combine with all of the fabulous products from Tattered Angels.

First up, my version of a subway sign.  I love the graphic design of these prints and decided to create my own.

To create this look, I first used Blue Skies, Turquoise Blue and Meadow Green mists to put a variegated foundation of color. I so love these colors together. They remind me of the beach.  I cut some random letters with the Slice, stuck them down and dry brushed over them with white paint.  It’s such a fun experience to pull up the letters after the paint was dry and see the bright colors underneath.

Next up a smaller canvas…this one was all about experimenting and playing with layers. Originally I made this with the intention it would go in my craft room, but I took it into the bedroom to find some light and I think it might just stay there.  Good think canvas is on sale at Michael’s this week and I can buy more for other rooms.

To start I glued some dictionary scraps and then sprayed with Jack Frost.  While the mist was still wet I swirled on some Big Apple glimmer glam.  Then a few layers of textured stamps and a diecut of more dictionary paper spritzed with Silver Sugar mist.

Finally, my favorite project of the month. I have had these Maya Road banners in my stash since last spring, just waiting for the inspiration to hit.  Finally it did!  And a bonus I finally found a project to use this lovely ribbon I bought in NYC a year ago.

To started I used some paper doilies as a stencil and sprayed with Tattered Leather which I watered down just a bit for a lighter color.  I then sprayed more doilies with Olive Vine.  On top some chipboard letters that were painted with Pink Lipstick Glitter Glam and Penny Loafer Glitter Glaze.

.

My favorite part of the project was ‘discovering’ that a new Studio Calico stamp that arrived just the day before was the perfect circumference for the doily outlines.

What have you done with Canvas lately?  Need more inspiration? Be sure to check out the Tattered Angels blog for all sorts of wonderful canvas creations.

oh my butterflies part 2

So now I have a desk full of beautiful stamped butterflies (see yesterday’s post if you don’t already know how they got there) but my mojo is tapped so I once again turn to Jennifer and start lifting her card design from the video.

Before long I had a set of my own — good thing I had some cuttlebug embossing folders on hand — no doubt from a previous purchase made after a McGuire video/blog post

and a close up of each since I can’t pick my favorite

It’s a little hard to tell in these photos, but these butterflies also have a touch of glitter to make them extra sparkly

last but not least…

I made 6 of these and still have more butterflies to play with, where will they land next?

oh my butterflies

curse Jennifer McGuire and her evil enabling ways. Now, before you get your fuss on, I am NOT saying she’s evil, because she’s so not… but darn if every time she posts a video my savings account takes a hit.

So much so that I stopped reading her blog on a daily basis — too much damage, and after some time I thought I had developed some willpower.  I was wrong.

Not mere moments after linking up her you tube channel on a thread on the SC message board about using distress inks, I sat down and start watching and before long I was in the car and driving to archivers for a stamp set.

So what was the video that broke me down — Jen using her copics in a speedy way.  I could blame it on the fact that my copics have sat unused for a couple of months and if you know copics you know that’s a serious investment to not use.  As I hit play I thought it’s ok, I won’t need the stamps I have plenty of stamps, I will be strong.

I will be strong

oh no butterflies…

I need more butterflies(um, no) and away I went…

and home I came with…

and  coloring I did and before long my desk was covered with beautiful colorful butterflies…

some I covered with a think coat of glossy accents and others with liquid pearls — oh so pretty.  Now I just need to put them to work on some projects.

Come back tomorrow to see where they land.
